Design Your Life – When Whitney Port Came to Chicago!

Last week, I had the opportunity to attend the Design Your Life event in Chicago.  Whitney Port came to town to speak at the event as well as sign her book, True Whit.  Upon arrival, guests were able to do a little shopping with some local vendors and do a lot of waiting for the main event.  The buzz all around was “When will Whitney appear?”, “Where will she be speaking?”, etc.  The venue was a nightclub with the usual set up: the bar and a DJ booth.  After about and hour and a half of waiting, Whitney arrived and she was set to speak standing in the DJ booth.

Whitney spoke for only about 10 or 15 minutes and took some questions from the audience.  I have to say I do admire her honesty.  She did not deny that she had been given an extremely unique opportunity of exposure through her reality television roles.  She did advise anyone trying to break into the fashion business to get a website, get involved on Twitter and use an online presence to get the most exposure for yourself.

Whitney advised that the beauty brands she loves include Fresh, Nars, and Cle de Peau.  She prefers a very minimal approach to her makeup.  She is very inspired by Diane von Furstenberg in fashion as well as business and her pants that evening were DVF.  Her wardrobe staple:  her motorcycle jacket since it’s versatile and can “harden up” an outfit (she was wearing it when she arrived).

The highlight of the night for me was chatting it up with a great group of bloggers that evening.  It really made the night catching up with Tabitha of Defining Tabitha who introduced me to Terez of Dbabetta.com, Cait of Pretty and Fun, Alessia of byAlessia.com, and Sara from Project Soiree.  Without the conversation I think I might have been underwhelmed by this event.  Thank you all for making it a very nice evening!

Have you attended any events where you expected one thing and got another (even better) experience?  I’d love to hear more about it so leave me a comment!
