Getting Through the Loss of My Mom with Soul Sessions - My Highest Self

Getting Through the Loss of My Mom with Soul Sessions

I have always believed in things many people might be skeptical of.  I have a very open mind and truly believe in the concept of soul mates, karma, the after-life, and those type of things.  I have a deep love for what most would consider “new age” thinking.  It just feels right to me.  Reading Soul Sessions by Carson Gage first appealed to me for a couple of reasons.  The book is based in Chicago (my home!) and it tells the story of a man who explores his past lives to help him out of a very deep depression.  The concept of reincarnation certainly has its skeptics and I was so intrigued to read a story based on that.  Soul Sessions turned out to be an even more profound read than I had imagined.  I purchased the book on a day of extreme lows for me.  You see, my mom had a stroke, had been in the hospital for 5 days at that time, with her condition rapidly deteriorating.  My mind in a state of chaos and sorrow, I sat down and started to read Soul Sessions.  The very next night, Mom passed away peacefully, surrounded by family and friends.  When I lost my mother, my mind swirled with thoughts of everything that I had not said or done.  The pain of knowing I would never see or talk to her again crippled me mentally.  It still does, it’s all I think about some days.

Soul Sessions Book Review

I began to read Soul Sessions daily, usually curled up with my favorite blanket in the living room.  I read along as Nick explores his prior incarnations through past life regression therapy.  While this is a work of fiction, the book became so real to me.  As I read, it helped me to think that while Mom had passed from this life, she will go on to the next.  I also tried to think what lives she might have had in the past.  Because of her love of country life while mostly living in the city, I feel like Mom was definitely a farm girl in a past life.  I began to make notes and bookmark favorite quotes from Soul Sessions as I went along.  One of my first saved quotes is from a beginning session with Nick and his therapist:  “Your whole life has been viewed from a false perspective…It’s as if you’ve been sleepwalking through life and don’t know it.”  This hit hard for me.  What a terrible existence to be sleepwalking through life and it got me really thinking.  I don’t want that for myself.  It caused me to sit up and take notice.  The explanation of how we go through past lives in the book includes talk of the superconscious mind:  “The superconscious mind existed before we were born into our current lives and will live on after our bodies die.  It’s our conscious minds that die, because they are tied to functioning brains…through the superconscious mind, we can find our true identity, which some say is our soul.”

I know that concepts such as these require a lot of trust and a very open mind.  It’s not for everyone but it is wholeheartedly for me.  Soul Sessions takes you on a journey with Nick while he discovers his soul mate who has actually been with him through several lifetimes.  I read each page with wonder and lots of tears.  I am shedding a river of tears just writing this blog post.  Soul Sessions was a bit like grief therapy for me.  I held on to this book with dear life at a time when I felt I could crumble at any moment.  I could go on for pages here sharing all the notes and bookmarks I made in Soul Sessions.  A very important quote from the book for me is this:  “A key karmic lesson for my soul to learn was that most forms of suffering come from attachment.”  Attachment to negative thoughts, experiences, and things all create suffering.  I get that.  I often preach that concept to friends and family.  When I lost my mom, I started holding on to things in my mind causing me deep pain.  This book helped me to let go just a little, day by day, of any negative thoughts and feelings.  It freed up my mind to think about my mom’s passing in a beautiful way.  I hope and pray that Mom is free and at peace.  I hope that she has already moved on to her next life where she will learn new lessons and find her soul mate.  I look for signs from her every day and have already seen a few.  I know she is with me, as I think of her always.

If you are open to reading a story of love, life, lessons, past lives, and soul mates then Soul Sessions by Carson Gageis for you.  If you are a skeptic of all those things, I say this book is even more so for you.  Soul Sessions will open your mind, heart, and soul to the beauty of spiritual thinking.

Your book summary is wonderful and so touching. It gave me insight not only into the book but also into what we go through when we lose a loved one. Sorry for your loss.

Marcia, thank you so much for your kind words. It has been a tough time, missing my mom and dealing with issues of loss and grief. Soul Sessions really was sent from the universe to me at the right time.
