Review: Yanni "Truth of Touch" - My Highest Self

Review: Yanni “Truth of Touch”

I was recently given the opportunity to review Yanni’s new album Truth of Touch.   This is Yanni’s first instrumental release of original compositions in over eight years.   I remember his music from the late 90s, it was especially huge during that time.  His tour in 1998 was ranked #2 for the entire year!

After listening to this album a number of times, I got a good feel for the music.  I found it good for listening at home while working at my computer, relaxing, or even in the car with the kids.  This album showcases an unexpected mix of sounds and great flow.  I have to admit I did approach this album with a preconceived notion that the album might not be my thing.  I was pleasantly surprised and found it was interesting that  almost every song gave me a visual as I listened.  Here are my thoughts on each track on the album:

Truth of Touch – an uplifting song, I favored this one and kept coming back to it.

Echo of a Dream – mellow, easy tempo song, fun picking out the different little sounds in this song.

Seasons – instantly makes me think of having a nice dance with my hubby in the moonlight at a beachside café.  Very pretty, uplifting.

Voyage – has a darker feel to it, heavier sounds, dramatic.  Definitely makes me think of a movie scene where a spy is breaking in somewhere top secret!  Towards the end of the song has a great finale.

Flash of Color – a latin feel, faster tempo, makes you sway to the groove.

Vertigo – quite a surprise, jumps right out at you. Not a favorite of mine but this one was quite different from the others. Not what you would expect on this album.

Nine – this song really belongs in one of those independent films, you know the cool instrumental in the background that really makes the movie? Really like this one.

Can’t Wait – female vocals in this one, nice voice and lyrics – Really loved this one! Another unexpected song from this album.  Some lyrics:  “Surround me completely lost somewhere in your arms, I need you , I can’t wait too long” A really great song, nice for an intimate evening with your loved one!

Guilty Pleasure – Quiet instrumental, calming and low key.

O Luce Che Brilla Nell Obscurita – guessing this is Greek or Italian male vocals, not my bag because I like to know the lyrics.

I’m So – an interesting little mix of some faint vocals with a nice groove.

Long Way Home – this one didn’t move me, I found it to be a little bland for my taste.

Yanni & Arturo – do I hear some trumpet? This is the kind of harsh trumpet sounds I do not care for at all!  Without that, I would listen.

Mist of a Kiss – a unique sound, there are some flute sounds in here that I really love.  Wooden flutes maybe?  Anyway, I like the sound of them!

Secret – Some more female vocals, another sensual-type song.  Another one that makes me think of  having a slow with my love.  A great song just for listening also.  This is one that will be a favorite for me.

You can purchase Truth of Touch on Yanni’s website and there are some nice gift packs offered (including umbrellas, candles, t-shirts).  You can also buy just the hard copy CD or the MP3 download.

Yanni is on tour right now and you can find all the tour dates on his website.

Note:  I received this album through One2OneNetwork for review, but all views expressed are my honest opinions.

I have been a fan for decades. One of the highlights of my life was to get awesome seats at his concert back when my husband and I were first dating.
