Since becoming a stay-at-home mom, the miles I put on my car have drastically reduced. Without a daily commute to and from work, my car trips stay pretty local. The fact that I still pay the same high car insurance payment has always irked me. When I heard that Metromile came on the scene as the first and only provider of pay-per-mile car insurance in the US, I was pretty excited!
Metromile uses an OBD-II device called Metromile Pulse to measure miles driven. The device plugs in to the onboard diagnostic port of your car. It does not monitor driving style or behaviors. The service is designed for those of us who drive less than 10,000 miles a year and can save drivers nearly $500 annually. That rocks! Metromile Pulse works with the free app to show driving stats for each trip, and even avoid street sweeping tickets with timely alerts (available in Chicago and San Francisco). If you are a Chicagoan, you know that this feature alone is something to write home about!
Metromile provides complete insurance coverage from collision to comprehensive. Another great feature: You can road trip for less since with per-mile insurance you aren’t charged for the miles you drive over 150 per day (250 per day in Washington). Going on a long trip saves you more!
You can test drive Metromile by signing up for the free beta app, Metromile Tag. It connects to your smartphone via Bluetooth to give you basic information about your driving trends, provides mileage tracking and more. Per-mile insurance with Metromile is currently available in California, Illinois, Washington, Virginia and Oregon. You can add yourself to the waitlist for an emailed notification of availablity in your state. More states are planned for 2015. Nationwide rollout of the free app experience is planned for this year.
