I’ve heard so many great things about Samantha Chapman’s (pixiwoo) Real Techniques makeup brushes, I was so excited when given the opportunity to try them. I love that the sets as well as individual brushes are listed at reasonable and affordable price points, as well as the brushes being 100% cruelty free. I picked out the Core Collection, which includes four essential face brushes. The set comes with a detailer blush for concealer (or lip products), a pointed foundation brush, a buffing brush and a contour brush.
I really liked the Real Techniques Core Collection case. It secures the brushes in with an elastic band fit to each brush, and has an extra band to put any other brushes you may want to carry with you. The case also doubles as a stand for display and easy access. There was one problem though! The elastic bands made to fit the individual brushes were a tad tight, which made it difficult to get the brushes in and out of the case. This resulted in some of the rubber on the handle to start rubbing off at the bottom from chafing the case within the first week of use.
The buffing and contour brushes are my favorite. They are both very full, plush and soft and feel great against the face when applying product. If you use a product that’s stiffer in the pan, however, these might not be able to pick up a lot of product in one swipe. I love the contouring brush for using with both my bronzer and blush, while I use the buffing brush for my setting powder. It’s just soft enough to apply product evenly without moving what makeup I already have on around.
The two flat brushes, the pointed foundation and detailer, are a little bit pokey. The bristles are stiffer which makes for easy application but due to the varying lengths, some end up poking at your face a bit sharply. The pointed foundation brush is rather small! It takes a while to apply liquid foundation to the entire face because of its size. Since I don’t use concealer, I’ve been using the detailer brush for lipsticks. It’s perfect for this job as it is very precise.
I really like the length of the Real Techniques Core Collection brushes and they are very lightweight. Overall I’m happy with them, and feel that they make applying my face products enjoyable!
