Review with Before and After Photos: L’Oreal Feria Hair Color

While I have tested and reviewed a few at-home hair color kits in the past, I have not shared details on one of my all-time favorite colors: L’Oreal Feria – 36 Chocolate Cherry (Deep Burgundy Brown).L'oreal Feria Review
I have purchased L’Oreal Feria – 36 Chocolate Cherry many times over the past several years. Feria is THE BEST at-home hair color I have ever used, and I believe I have been a fan since 1999!  I would consider L’Oreal Power Reds Shade R37 my absolute favorite but it can be difficult to find in stores.

L'Oreal Feria Burgundy ReviewIn the box, you will find the Shimmering Conditioning Colour Gel, Developer Creme, Aromatic Shimmer Serum, Power Shimmer Conditioner and instructions/gloves.  I love the Feria brand because it delivers on the claim of “multi-faceted shimmering colour”.  It is also unique because it includes the Aromatic Shimmer Serum which adds a more pleasant scent to the process than the usual stink of hair dye!

With my thick thick and stubborn hair (and also plenty of grays) I always leave the hair color on for the maximum time, sometimes longer.  I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS FOR OTHERS.  I know my hair.  From many years of home hair color I know what it takes for my very best color result.

I absolutely love the color result from L’Oreal Feria 36 Deep Burgundy Brown, it is so vibrant!  It seamlessly covers my grays and blends my natural-color roots with residual box color well.  I like that my hair looks shiny and has a conditioned feel to it.  I think the color result also matches the photo on the box, a major plus.  I always get compliments on my hair after using this color!  I will continue to purchase the Feria brand and highly recommend it to anyone who likes to dye their own hair!

Available at Walmart, $8.97.

Is that a warm or cool shade? When I put warm red shades on my hair I end up with hot roots.

Hi Diane, honestly I have no knowledge of warm and cool shades. I even did some googling to find out. Sorry I can’t help you more.

Hi! I am thinking of dying my hair this color. I want my hair to be a deep (but not vibrant) purple with neutral undertones. Does this color have purple tones in it? I have dark brown hair currently. What does this color actually look like?

Hi Elena! This color is burgundy and I don’t feel that it has purple tones to it. The photo on the box and the after photos are a really good representation of the color result. My hair is also dark brown so you can see the color result that I got from this shade.

I have used so mant different hair dyes. The color you have is somewhat of wht i was looking for. How long did yours last?? I used John Freida and it looks good for like 3 days and went away. Then I went to sallys and bought the Hi-Lift stuff and now my hair is inbetween red and purple im really upset the color is not what I wanted..

Hi Jennifer! I don’t know what color you are starting with and I think that makes a lot of difference also. Is your natural hair color, light or dark? I’d say the color is vibrant for about 2 weeks and then fades out but it’s a color I still like. I have a few tips that I think make a big difference on your color result and on helping the color to fade less. I recommend being very particular with your shampoo and conditioner. Use somethings sulfate free or specific for color treated hair. Some of my favorites: https://myhighestselfblog.com/aveeno-active-naturals-living-color-color-preserving-shampoo-conditioner/

Color your hair when it is dirty, maybe two days after washing. Right after you color, do not wash with shampoo just rinse your hair out in cool water and use the conditioner provided. Do not shampoo for at least 3 days after you color, for me that’s the best way to preserve the color. You can also use dry shampoo or sulfate free conditioner in between washes. Another tip that helps is try not to use hot water on your hair at all, just warm and rinse cool if you can. Since reds can fade quickly anyway, the more you can do to help preserve the color the better it will look! Hope that helps 🙂

Absolutely love that color. That’s why I am trying to get for myself. I have dark brown hair and used Revlon Colorsilk’s #48 Burgundy but after two washes it’s already faded a lot to just a slightly different color of brown… how long does your dye last for you?

Hi Christa! I can get mine to stay vibrant for quite a while because this formula and color is so vibrant. But I also recommend being very particular with your shampoo and conditioner. Use somethings sulfate free or specific for color treated hair. Some of my favorites: https://myhighestselfblog.com/aveeno-active-naturals-living-color-color-preserving-shampoo-conditioner/

I’ve been contemplating doing an at home color for a while now because I really want to go back to black. I’ve gone two years now without coloring my hair and cut back on straightening in hopes of healing my hair but I still have major split ends… Might as well have it the color I want if I still have split ends right?!

Yep I feel the same way! I have SO MUCH hair I just can’t worry about split ends or how much hair I lose every time I shower. I have cut down on blow drying/flat ironing but I still do my color :).
